Study information

  • Research Area: PIH/IMB-supported districts: Kirehe, Southern Kayonza and Burere
  • Research type: The participants will be all clinicians in practice or on call before and during the COVID-19 outbreak as well as administrative staff who have contact with patients on a regular basis. At the district level, the clinical participants will include medical doctors such as all specialists, general practitioners (GPs), and nurses in the following departments: pediatrics, internal medicine, surgery maternity, OPD and specialized clinics such as NCD clinics. At the health center level, the participants will be nurses in the OPD, inpatient wards, maternity, and other relevant clinics. The administrative participants will include receptionists and other staff members who have direct contact with patients. The exclusion criteria will be healthcare professionals and administrative staff who were on leave during the period of COVID-19. Staff members who were not working on a regular basis before the outbreak such as new hires will also be excluded from this study.

Study aim of the objectives

The goal of this study is to inform COVID-19 outbreak response measures, including policies, interventions and communications and to adapt routine clinical care.
The study objectives are:
1. To assess COVID-19 preparedness by providers, administration staff and their health facilities
2. To assess COVID-19 response in health facilities
3. To assess how the routine provision of care has been affected by COVID-19 and response measures
4. To assess the association between preparedness, response and impact, and health facility level (district hospital versus health center).

Study setting/Area (Location)

Three district hospitals that are supported by PIH/IMB as well as all health centers in their catchment areas.
