Definition

The Non Communicable Diseases (NCD) Division has the mandate of coordinating all NCDs prevention, early detection, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitative interventions in the country.

What We Do

The NCDs Division coordinates the planning and the implementation of non-communicable diseases prevention, early detection, diagnosis, care, and treatment. The division works in close collaboration with health facilities, partners, and other public institutions to reduce the disease burden among Rwandans. In addition, palliative care and NCDs epidemiology services are cross cutting priorities across all four units. The division’s four units include:

  • Cancer Diseases
  • Cardiovascular Diseases
  • Injury and Disabilities
  • Diabetes, Lung, Renal and Other Metabolic Diseases

Priority activities include

  • Increasing awareness in the community about NCDs prevention and early detection
  • Integrating cervical cancer screening and breast cancer early detection in primary health care facilities
  • Establishment of specialized facilities for management of NCDs mainly cancer, cardiac surgery, dialysis, renal transplantation and rehabilitation centers.
  • Upgrading cancer diagnostic capacity in the country, with a focus in teaching hospitals
  • Decentralization of the integrated NCDs management in health centers and district hospitals
  • Improving facility management and rehabilitation of injuries and rehabilitative services for persons with disabilities
  • Establishing disease registries: National Cancer Registry, Injury Registry, Diabetes Registry, Rheumatic Heart Diseases Registry
  • Promotion of NCDs related research

Vision and Mission

Vision: To protect Rwanda's population from morbidity and mortality related to NCDs.
Our Mission: To alleviate the burden of NCDs among all people in Rwanda through integrated prevention, diagnosis, quality care and treatment. .

Rwanda holds bimonthly routine awareness activities to promote healthy lifestyle interventions and tips called Car Free Day, in prevention of NCDs. Activities include exercise, nutrition advice, and health screenings. .
