Rubavu, Rwanda. Rwanda joins the rest of the world to observe the 36th anniversary of World AIDS Day in 2024 under the theme “End AIDS, My Responsibility: Kurandura SIDA, ni Inshingano yanjye.” The national event will be held in Rubavu District at Kivu Intare Arena on December 1, 2024.

The theme emphasizes the call for personal and collective action in the fight against HIV/AIDS, through regular testing, adherence to treatment, supporting people living with HIV (PLHIV), and addressing stigma to foster an inclusive community.

Reflecting on Rwanda’s progress and ongoing commitment, Prof. Claude Muvunyi Mambo, the Director General of Rwanda Biomedical Centre (RBC), reiterated the call for collective commitment to achieve the global target of ending HIV/AIDS by 2030.

“Rwanda has made remarkable progress in preventing HIV, ensuring timely initiation and retention to life saving treatment. However, HIV epidemic remains a public health burden, and the fight against it requires sustained effort and innovative strategies to reach the last mile. It is imperative to acknowledge the vital role that communities play in closing the remaining gaps.” Prof. Muvunyi noted.

Over the past 20 years, Rwanda has intensified efforts in HIV prevention and treatment. The country was ranked by the Global UNAIDS Report 2023, as one of five African countries that have achieved the 95-95-95 targets; with an estimated 95% of people living with HIV aware of their status, 97% receiving antiretroviral therapy, and 98% achieving viral load suppression. With these achievements, Rwanda is on the right track to meet the UNAIDS target of ending AIDS by 2030.

Rubavu district, hosting WAD2024 celebration, is a major cross-border hub with high population mobility. This dynamic environment poses an increased risk of the spread of infectious diseases, including HIV, and other Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) like Mpox. The celebration in Rubavu provide an opportunity to amplify awareness and prevention efforts among the general and high-risk populations.
