The Ministry of Health in Rwanda urges Rwandan mothers to practice Exclusive. Exclusive breastfeeding should start immediately after. The mothers should try to breastfeed their babies exclusively until they are around 6 months old.
If a baby is exclusively breastfed they don’t need water or any other drinks or food until they are around 6 months old.
After 6 months, exclusive breast milk is not enough on its own for the baby to grow and develop. The mothers should start their baby on solid food and also continue breastfeeding until they are at least 1 year old.
When mothers are away from their babies, they should try to ensure that they are fed with expressed breast milk.
Breastfeeding is very beneficial to the baby and the mother. It helps to protect the baby against colds, tummy bugs, infections and allergies. The mother breastfeeding feels closer to her baby and may reduce some cancers and bone diseases
