This booklet and video script accompany a series of four videos featuring a senior Rwandan psychiatrist. The videos were created to support healthcare professionals (HCPs) to ensure that they can confidently support patients with schizophrenia to achieve the best outcomes.

This video serves as the introduction to the series.

Each of the four video modules is described below.

Module 1: Treating Schizophrenia: A summation of clinical practice guidelines around diagnosis, initial evaluation, and treatment

Module 2: FGAs and SGAs: What You Need to Know: Serves as a refresher on Second Generation Anti-psychotics (SGAs), compares FGAs to SGAs, emphasizes the benefits of different choices available

Module 3: Collaborating With Patients: A tutorial on communicating, active listening, and goal setting with patients to optimize treatment

Module 4: Preparing for a Better Future: A guide to help HCPs improve long-term outcomes that focuses on relapse prevention and adherence to treatment

Distribution will be to psychiatrists and psychiatric nurses in the (12) national and provincial hospitals in the first phase and more broadly in the longer-term.

  • These patient, caregiver and community schizophrenia educational, non-promotional materials were created to support awareness, knowledge and education about schizophrenia and its treatment. Insights from patient journey mapping research that was conducted in Rwanda in 2018-19 were used to inform the development of the content. The Journeys of Hope program includes a series of (4) booklets. Each book is anchored by character-based story-telling derived and adapted from real stories of people living with schizophrenia (through the research) while preserving anonymity and includes family members, Community Health Workers (CHWs), and others in community. Booklets include worksheets that initiate action planning such as goal setting, developing a social support network, remembering to take medication, and preparing patients and caregivers for follow-up appointments.
  • Booklet two is intended for persons recently diagnosed with schizophrenia and their caregiver(s). This booklet normalizes the condition for a newly diagnosed patinet, models behavior that leads to optimal health outcomes and provides hope.
  • In the first phase of distribution, the booklets will be distributed by Johnson & Johnson’s Rwanda-based Product Specialist, Blaise Ishimwe, to psychiatrists and psychiatric nurses at the (12) national and provincial public hospitals to then give to their diagnosed schizophrenia patients and caregivers and/or family families. In the second phase of distribution, the booklets will be distributed to health centers and CHWs, to give to patients, caregivers, families and interested community members.
