Today, Rwandans were encouraged to go for early screening to prevent NCDs during the celebration of the World Hypertension Day under the theme “Measure Your Blood Pressure, Control It, Live Longer” with the goal of increasing high blood pressure (BP) awareness in all populations around the world and a focus on accurate BP measurement.
In Rwanda, the prevalence of Hypertension (HTN) in people between 15 and 64 years old was estimated at 15%, meaning that we should be having around 1 million people with HTN in our NCDs clinics nationwide but currently we only have around 80,000 people enrolled in our clinics, representing a coverage of 10%. we still have many people with HTN in the community undiagnosed or not under treatment.
On this occasion Rwanda Biomedical Centre in partnership with Rwanda College of Physicians (RCP); an organization of Specialists in Internal medicine and its subspecialties in Rwanda has organized screening of Hypertension at the Parliament of Rwanda where senators and parliamentarians were screened for HTN and Diabetes; and in banks located in Kigali as part to commemorate the World Hypertension Day.
Honorable Dr. Iyamuremye Augustin the President of Senate of Rwanda called upon Rwandans to for screening.
“I first want to thank RBC for this having organized the screening of members of the Senate, I want to thank all health professionals working in health facilities. Prevention is better than cure, We are here to know our health status so as to take prevention measures against NCDs; I call upon Rwandans aged more than 40 years to go for screening as regularly as possible.” Said Honorable Iyamuremye.
Dr. Uwinkindi Francois the Division Manager of NCDS Division says that when patients go for treatment of NCDS at advanced stages, it becomes very complicated for the patient to be treated and cured.
“When symptoms of NCDs emerge, it means the diseases are at an advanced stage, they start killing you slowly. If you don’t go for screening early, that’s when you see a patient with heart attack, with stroke, or his/her leg has been amputated because of diabetes. We call upon people to go for early screening to know their health status for prevention or early treatment when sick.” Said Dr. Uwinkingi
Hypertension is the leading cause of cardiovascular diseases and premature death worldwide. It is a serious medical condition and can increase the risk of heart, brain, kidney and other diseases. It is a major cause of premature death worldwide, with upwards of 1 in 4 men and 1 in 5 women over a billion people having the condition.

Kigali, May 14, 2021.
