Rwanda Equips Health Workers for Early Marburg Virus Detection

Kigali, Rwanda — July 25, 2025 — The Rwanda Biomedical Centre, in collaboration with AFENET, Jhpiego, UNICEF, and the Pandemic Fund, has completed a nationwide training campaign to strengthen Marburg Virus Disease (MVD) surveillance. As part of the “Strengthening Pandemic Prevention & Response Through One Health Approach in Rwanda” project, the effort reached 13 high-risk districts, enhancing Event-Based Surveillance capabilities through hands-on instruction for over 2,100 frontline workers.

Delivered in two phases, the program trained hospital staff and cascaded knowledge to health center workers, covering mobile reporting, rapid response coordination, and community-level alert systems. The initiative supports Rwanda’s One Health framework and aligns with the International Health Regulations (IHR 2005), ensuring outbreaks are detected and managed swiftly.

With surveillance systems now fully operational in targeted districts, Rwanda is taking proactive steps to safeguard public health against MVD and other emerging threats.
